Words to Start Your Week

My brother reminded me of this thought and included a photo to drive home the point — remember how pictures are worth a thousand words — this one might be worth 10,000 words.

Chicago Free Fridays 2: How to Score Free Oprah Tickets

We have lots of visitors and guests and invariably, they all ask — “How do I get free tickets for Oprah?”  I found a great website resource for all you Chicagoans and visitors alike called Free Things to Do in Chicago .

Here is what they say about scoring Oprah tickets:

things to do in chicago One of the most popular free things to do in Chicago is to take in an Oprah taping in the West Loop at her Harpo Studios. Audience reservations for The Oprah Winfrey Show are available almost exclusively by phone. As you can imagine, demand for free Oprah tickets far exceeds supply, so you may receive a lot of busy signals before getting through to one of the audience department employees. Periodically, you may be able to request last-minute reservations via e-mail.

The Oprah Winfrey Show taping schedule: Ms. Winfrey is much too important to be tied down to a production schedule like regular talk-show hosts. Therefore, your guess is a good as anyone as to what days the show tapes. A specific list of days is given to those lucky enough to get through by phone to…………  Learn more at   Free Things to Do in Chicago

Lonely Planet Names Chicago Top Tourist City

Prescott Carlson of About.com:Chicago Travel points out that the Lonely Planet Travel Guide has named the Windy City one of the top 10 cities in the world in their upcoming book Best in Travel 2009Chicago was the only U.S. city that made the list. He says there is no argument from him as Chicago is home to magnificent architecture, world class restaurants, luxury hotels, a gorgeous lakefront, and tons of things to do and free things to do.  I found a great website resource for all you Chicagoans and visitors alike called Free Things to Do in Chicago.

As the only American city to make the competitive cut, the globe-trotting experts at Lonely Planet sited Chicago’s business, art, architecture, food, music, theater and overall culture as the winning criteria. McDonald’s and Oprah originate here, along with other ubiquitous, historical and random landmarks alike, including jazz and blues festivals, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the Green Mill, the Chicago Theater, and Picasso outdoor art. According to destination-expert author Karla Zimmerman, “If you want your finger on America’s pulse, don’t head to New York or LA. The heart beats in Chicago.”

Chicago’s future skyline

But the Lonely Planet also nods their hats to what has yet to come, perhaps facilitating our bid for the 2016 Olympics; as if our array of world-renowned sports teams (Bears, Bulls, Cubs, Sox, Blackhawks, etc.) weren’t enough.

While Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2009 released last month, Zimmerman scooped the city before Obama could scoop the President-elect title. This is just one more piece of evidence that points to Chicago’s bright future. Despite our inferiority complex to cities like New York, it’s nice that the “Second City” is finally getting some recognition among the first cities of the world. Other global cities on the list you’ll need to visit this year include Antwerp, Beirut, Glasgow, Lisbon, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Warsaw and Zurich.

Chicago Free Friday 3: 4/19 Home Depot Free CFL lighbulbs

Home Depot will be giving away 1 million Ecosmart 14w CFL bulbs on April 19, 2009 in honor of Earth Day. There are not many restrictions on this giveaway and no purchase is required. For more details, read the information here.

If you haven’t used them before, a CFL bulb is compact fluorescent lamp, a type of bulb that uses less power and has a longer life than a regular light bulb. I have replaced my outside lights with these kind of bulbs about a year ago and they haven’t gone out yet! I’m all for greener solutions that have better results than their non-green counterparts.

Don’t just throw away a CFL bulb, though. Please read the EPA’s article here on proper disposal of a CFL bulb.

Home Depot is making it easy – and free – by giving away one million EcoSmart 14w CFL bulbs on April 19th.

You might want to get there early, as stores’ quantities are limited. One per customer, please.

Chicago Free Friday — Free Days at Chicago History Museum

The Chicago History Museum –This is a privately endowed museum focusing on the rich history of the city. It’s $14 to visit, but every Monday it’s FREE!

This month, the focus is on the Lincoln Treasures, which tell the story of Abraham Lincoln’s rise to the presidency, his struggle to keep the country united, and how people remembered him after he died. Come see President Lincoln as a student, husband, father, friend, and a leader who changed the nation.

Lincoln - Chicago History Museum

On display for a limited time, see Lincoln’s handwritten speech that helped the nation understand the reasons behind the country’s bloodiest war. Four months after the Battle of Gettysburg, Lincoln delivered his brief but powerful speech at the battleground for the dedication of the soldiers’ cemetery. See one of the five handwritten copies of the speech, on loan from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield.

Extended hours: the Museum will open at 10:00 a.m. on Sundays while the Gettysburg Address in on view, April 4 through May 3, 2009.

Friday Free Things in Chicago – Part 2

Here is another excellent entertainment option for free in Chicago: The Edge Comedy Club’s Big Fancy Stand-Up Comedy Open Mic. Every Wednesday night, from 8:30 to 10:30, pros and amateurs perform at the Chicago Center for the Performing Arts (Phone: 312-733-6000) which is located at 777 N. Green St. (1 block west of Chicago and Halsted Avenues). Click here for a map.

This comedy show is borne out of the Edge Comedy Boot Camp, where you can learn to be a comic yourself. You will be impressed by the number of young comics showing off their skills; some have a bright future, some love to use their humor to deaden the grind of their regular 9-to-5,  and some need to pursue a different career before it is too late. But you will have fun one way or another.

You can get your taxes done for free in Chicago!

I know it is close to tax time but if you are like me, you are still pulling together paperwork.  With all the economic bad news impacting many Americans, I just recently found out that there is some good news — if you earned less than $35,000 last year, you can get your taxes done, for free, in Chicago just by placing a phone call.

A continuing program from the Center For Economic Progress and the City of Chicago can help.  Tax preparation services can help, but you’ll probably pay hundreds of dollars to have your tax forms filled out. Once again, the Center For Economic Progress and the City of Chicago have teamed up to provide this free tax preparation and electronic filing service for metro area residents.   Last year….”the tax counseling project did 20,000 returns and brought back $25 million in refunds to families and individuals throughout Illinois,” says David Marzahl, Center For Economic Progress.
