It is All About Perspective

I got this today and it changed my perspective on the day.  Take the 60 seconds it will take to read this and I believe it will change your thinking, too.

hospital

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs.  His bed was next to the room’s only window.

The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.  Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. Resurrection Sunday

easter-tomb.jpgWhat a  great day it is in Chicago and around the world!  Today as we attend Park Community Church with lots of friends, we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is not a day to celebrate Easter bunnies, nor Peeps, candy, hard-boiled Paas-dyed eggs,  not even Easter, but Resurrection Sunday.  Here is what the Bible says:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.  There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

(John 1:1-15) On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them,

“Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!”

(Luke 1:1-3)

Did you know that the timing of the crucifixion and resurrection is significant and  meaningful? The resurrection of Jesus is the culmination of all things meaningful, in both faith and fact, in establishing a relationship with God.  God used the timing, which occurred just after the “Passover” and during the Feast of Unleavened Bread, to illustrate the ultimate sacrifice He made for sinners. Friday Free Things in Chicago – Part 2

Here is another excellent entertainment option for free in Chicago: The Edge Comedy Club’s Big Fancy Stand-Up Comedy Open Mic. Every Wednesday night, from 8:30 to 10:30, pros and amateurs perform at the Chicago Center for the Performing Arts (Phone: 312-733-6000) which is located at 777 N. Green St. (1 block west of Chicago and Halsted Avenues). Click here for a map.

This comedy show is borne out of the Edge Comedy Boot Camp, where you can learn to be a comic yourself. You will be impressed by the number of young comics showing off their skills; some have a bright future, some love to use their humor to deaden the grind of their regular 9-to-5,  and some need to pursue a different career before it is too late. But you will have fun one way or another.

You can get your taxes done for free in Chicago!

I know it is close to tax time but if you are like me, you are still pulling together paperwork.  With all the economic bad news impacting many Americans, I just recently found out that there is some good news — if you earned less than $35,000 last year, you can get your taxes done, for free, in Chicago just by placing a phone call.

A continuing program from the Center For Economic Progress and the City of Chicago can help.  Tax preparation services can help, but you’ll probably pay hundreds of dollars to have your tax forms filled out. Once again, the Center For Economic Progress and the City of Chicago have teamed up to provide this free tax preparation and electronic filing service for metro area residents.   Last year….”the tax counseling project did 20,000 returns and brought back $25 million in refunds to families and individuals throughout Illinois,” says David Marzahl, Center For Economic Progress. Off to Mexico to Celebrate

Having snagged some of the unbelieveable cruise deals that are out there now, my wife and I are off to the Mexican Riveria to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary — where has the time gone? We have some awesome friends who volunteered to watch our kids for a week — what friends we have! Anyway, we head to LA to visit friends then we are off on a Princess Cruise for a 7 day cruise to the Mexican Riveria, including stops at Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas.  I am so excited to decompress, to enjoy some down time and to spend time with my better half, away from the kids.  See ya soon!

If you have been to any of these Mexican cities, please leave a comment as to what we should do — we don’t have anything planned yet.  What was your favorite memory or thing to do?

UIC Says Yes to Olympics’ Free Use of Facilities

Chicago Olympics The University of Illinois-Chicago has agreed to let the city use five campus venues for the Olympics if the games come to town in 2016. University trustees approved a deal Tuesday that gives the city use of the UIC Pavilion, Flames Athletic Center, the Physical Education Building, the South Field Complex and Flames Field and the Student Recreation Facility.

The deal says the Pavilion would host boxing and paralympic volleyball. The games will run through July and August. The university wouldn’t be paid for use of the venues but wouldn’t assume any costs, either. Chicago is a finalist for the 2016 games, along with Tokyo, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro. A decision is expected in October.
