Mothers Day tidbits

What is a Mom worth? A lot if you ask me!

On this weekend when much of America takes time out to salute the Mothers out there, this is a timely questions to ponder……..A recent study by Salary.com pegs Mom’s annual financial worth at $134,121 annually. For moms that also work out of the house, they deserve an additional $85,876 annual compensation for their additional “mom jobs” preformed outside of their normal working hours on their regular paying job. The top ten primary duties of American moms are housekeeper, day care center teacher, cook, computer operator, laundry machine operator, janitor, facilities manager, van driver, CEO and psychologist. Adding to the list of job titles, on average, stay-at-home moms are working 91.6 hours at being a mom while working mothers add an additional 44 hours of mommy work to their already overloaded regular job.

HISTORY:

The first Mother’s Day observance was a church service in 1908 requested by Anna Jarvis, of Philadelphia, to honor her deceased mother. Jarvis, at an early age, had heard her mother express hope that a day to commemorate all mothers would be established.                    [Read more...]

Happy Mothers Day!

I’m 2 for 2…

I have the best mom in the world and my wife is the best mom in the world to our four kids. They are to be commended each day for the investment they made (and are making) in their kids and grandkids.  It’s a shame that we only give them a 24-hour window of public acclaim.  This is a long marathon of a job and they deserve constant affirmation for the tremendous job they are doing.

It is interesting to see how in my opinion, in general, today’s society, devalues the role of the mom.  Both my mother and my wife have been  instrumental in driving values, world-view, logic, manners and moderation into the lives of our kids, day in and day out….

I love you both so enjoy this day!

Missional Living as Leaders

Last night, we gathered 150 of our leaders and celebrated the incredible work that God is doing in and through Park Community Church. One of the highlights was the message given by our Lead Pastor, Jackson Crum, on the need for our leaders to live missionally in the city. Have a listen here.

Leader Zone Tonight

leader zoneTonight, we gather our 200 leaders at the Kitsch’n Restaurant by our new warehouse building (restaurant is at 800 N Larrabee St at 6:30 p.m.) and get a chance to interact, to inspire, to spend time together and plan for the summer. In 2007, we are striving to be more intentional about growing and developing our leadership community at Park Community Church, as we begin to think about reproducing, adding a fourth service, adding a location and growing to reach many more people in Chicago this summer who do not know the life-changing message of the Gospel. If you are a leader at Park (small groups, ministry leader or team leader), please join us for our second Leader Zone Meeting of 2007, tonight.  God is up to something BIG here in the city and we are excited to come alongside that work.

Piper: The Gospel in Six Minutes

Was searching around tonight and came across this 6 minute oasis from John Piper – who reminds us of the promises of 1 Thes 5:9-10 — 9For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him.  Wow — what a great reminder……

What Don’t I Know?

dam.jpgAnother day — another suspension of some guys whose cycling teams less than 10 days ago denied reports in the Italian press that the team had sidelined it key riders. Is there something I don’t know?

Have the team’s managers been worn down by the authorities’ juggernaut or do they really know something about Operacion Puerto that nobody is talking about?

In a press release today, their Tinkoff Credit Systems team announced that Tyler Hamilton and Jörg Jaksche will not race the 2007 Giro d’Italia and have been suspended indefinitely “until the competent authorities … have finally sorted out all the implication of the riders in Operación Puerto“. Team management said the decision was aimed “at relieving pressure created around the Giro … and on the team itself” after statements made by other squads that decided to deny Giro starts to riders thought to have been implicated in the Spanish blood-doping inquiry. In addition, German sprinter Danilo Hondo has also been suspended, although Tinkoff vows to “fully support” the fight against doping pressed by UCI president Pat McQuaid and race organizers.

This was a HUGE u-turn for Tinkoff, which on April 30 denied reports in the Italian press that the team had sidelined Hamilton and Jaksche, when the GM told Velo News “For me, Tyler and Jörg can start the Giro. Stories that they are suspended are not true.” “Tinkoff has a list of 12 riders that can go to the Giro. Tyler is on that list and we expect him to race.”

Hamilton also held out great hope, saying “Everything is for the Giro. I want to be on the podium in Milan,” at the Tour de Georgia.

What is happening here…Is the dam about to break? What do you think?

Raise Your Prices or I’ll Sue!

four-dollar-gas.jpgCan this be a market driven economy or one driven by the oil companies? Can you believe this story? It sounds like a classic scene from a mob story — “Raise your prices or I’ll ……..sue!” Thank GodI live in the city, have a Honda Pilot that gets 25 MPG and I only fill up twice a month (its one of the perks of city living — as well as all the great things in a world-class city like Chicago)

MERRILL, Wis. – A service station that offered discounted gas to senior citizens and people supporting youth sports has been ordered by the state to raise its prices. Center City BP owner Raj Bhandari has been offering senior citizens a 2 cent per gallon price break and discount cards that let sports boosters pay 3 cents less per gallon.

But the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says those deals violate Wisconsin’s Unfair Sales Act, which requires stations to sell gas for about 9.2 percent more than the wholesale price.” Bhandari said he received a letter from the state auditor last month saying the state would sue him if he did not raise his prices. The state could penalize him for each discounted gallon he sold, with the fine determined by a judge.

Prince: A Bible Man?

prince.jpg

U.S. rock star Prince will play 21 concerts in London later this year and plans to take time off music to study the Bible, he announced on Tuesday. Wearing dark shades, Prince explained why his only appearances in Europe this year would take place in London, where he will do 21 shows. “I love London. I’ve had some of my favorite shows here.”

The 48-year-old said he was getting his inspiration these days from “prophets from the Bible”. “That’s another reason why we’re trying to stay so long. I just need to take some time off for study and travel.” When asked what he was studying, he replied: “The Bible”.

Some of his fans may finds that odd – but at some point every person in the world has to come to grips with the questions, “Why am I here?”, “Is this all there is?” and “where will I go when I die?” — I for one am excited to see where this takes Prince.  I don’t know what he is pursuing but he is pursuing….

Hero to Zero

I am a big cycling fan and another hero of mine has fallen. After watching Ivan Basso for so many years and seeing Discovery Channel hire him, I thought for sure he was clean and honest. I thought that Discovery Channel would have grilled him and done every test in the book before hiring him so I thought that was a good indicator of truth and honesty. But no.

Giro d’Italia champion Ivan Basso said on Tuesday he had never used illegal substances or blood transfusions but was guilty of attempts at doping. “It is only attempted doping. my career I have never used doping substances or transfusions,” Basso told reporters at a packed news conference in Milan. On Tuesday, he declined to give details of what attempted doping meant. Italian media said his blood had been discovered in bags during the Spanish investigation.  Basso emphatically denied that his 2006 Giro victory was fuelled by illegal methods and said he was keen to return to a sport which has been badly tarnished by a number of doping allegations in recent years.

Another hero falls to zero.      Please Floyd….please be telling the truth about your innocence.  Thank God there is one hero who held the truth above all else and did what he said he would do.

Ouch!

DETROIT (Reuters) – The Detroit Piston’s overpowering scoring and strong defense lifted them to a crushing 108-87 win over our beloved Chicago Bulls and put us down 2 games to zero in the Eastern Conference semi-final series on Monday. “The thing that’s most surprising is both games haven’t been competitive,” Bulls coach Scott Skiles told reporters. “Both times from the jump ball, they’ve owned us all over the floor.” The victory was the sixth straight in the playoffs for the Pistons, who swept the Orlando Magic in four games in their opening series. Game Three of the best-of-seven series is in Chicago on Thursday. Come on home Bulls and regroup!

Are You an Omnivore or a Mobile Centric?

tech.jpg(Pew Internet) A new study released this week by the Pew Internet and American Life Project called “A Typology of Information and Communication Technology Users”, showed that fully 85% of American adults use the internet or cell phones – and most use both. Yet the proportion of adults who exploit the connectivity, the capacity for self expression, and the interactivity of modern information technology is still only a modest 8%.

The report categorizes Americans based on the amount of information and communication technologies (ICT) they possess, how they use them, and their attitudes about the role of ICTs are in their lives. Ten separate groups emerged in the report, which classified about 31 percent of Web 2.0 participants as Elite Tech Users, meaning they often use these kinds of functions. Another 20 percent were classified as Middle-of-the- Road Tech Users, and a full 49 percent fall into a category called Few Tech Assets. Here is a description from Pew of the 10 ICT types — Where are you? Where is your church staff? Where is your congregation?

The ‘Elites’

  • Omnivores (8%): They have the most information gadgets and services, which they use voraciously to participate in cyberspace, express themselves online, and do a range of Web 2.0 activities. Most in this group are men in their mid- to late twenties. This would be folks in ministry like Jason Powell or Tony Dye or Brian Glass, all tech gadgetmeisters! [Read more...]
  • Cool Globes This Summer

It almost time for the new Chicago summer art installation — this time it is “Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet”, which is a public art project designed to increase awareness of and promote solutions to global warming. Artists are finishing preparations on 122 five-foot fiberglass globe sculptures, which are all ready to be mounted along the Chicago streets and lakefront from June to September 2007. I am not a big global warming guy but the artistry on these globes is fantastic! We’re hoping to get one that our artists at Park Community Church can decorate.

“‘Cool Globes’ is public art with a purpose. We are hoping to inspire with a call to action to bring solutions to global warming,” said Wendy Abrams, President and Founder of “Cool Globes”. Just as the 1999 Cows on Parade art installation brought visitors to Chicago, the promoters of “Cool Globes” hope that Chicagoans and tourists stroll the   [Read more...]

Sunday Chicago Photo of the Week

I love Chicago…plain and simple. This is the best place to live, work, play and minister. As I roll through life, I often seek out photobloggers who capture the essence of what Chicago is and when I find those photos, I love to just take them in and see how they are able to see Chicago…and express the clarity of Chicago through the lense. Now I am going to periodically share their excellent work on my blog. The first photo to be featured comes from Araceli Arroyo of Chicago, who has captured the luminescence of the Merchandise Mart in a way I have never seen before. Wow — she is good! What do you think? New building digital rendering

CHICAGO, IL (Assist News Service) After being located at 646 South State Street since 1923, Chicago’s Pacific Garden Mission (PGM) is a few short months away from moving into a new 150,000 square foot state-of-the-art rescue mission. In addition to the benefit of bringing all its ministry services under one roof, the functional, three-story facility has been planned with Green environmentally friendly design principles and renewable energy technologies in mind.

At the building’s 2005 groundbreaking ceremony, PGM President David McCarrell traced the history and longevity of the mission. He stated, “For 128 years, Pacific Garden Mission has served the spiritual and social needs of the less fortunate citizens of Chicago. This new state-of-the-art facility will enable us to address the spiritual and physical needs more effectively in a building that is LEED [Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design] certified and environmentally friendly.”

What Are Characteristics of a Missional Church?

Our church, Park Commmunity Church, is in the middle of a key series called “Missional Living in the City” and we are learning what it means to be ‘on mission’ in the city. Here’s another take on it from Tim Keller, Senior Pastor of Reedeemer Presebyterian Church, who gives a 5 minute summary of the characteristics of a missional church.

    God Wins!

In our couples Bible study we are reading Revelation, and some times it is confusing, sometimes it doesn’t make sense, and sometimes it is a little scary! But Rick, one of the guys in the group, came across this devotion from Our Daily Bread. It reminds us of the ultimate truth — God Wins! With all our busy-ness, and all of the distractions that get in the way of us of pursuing Christ, we must remind ourselves that in the end, God is victorious and Jesus can be seen in his victorious light from Revelation 19:

11I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. 12His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”[a] He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

(Our Daily Bread) Walking through campus one day, a seminary professor came upon a custodian reading the Bible during lunch hour. The professor asked what he was reading. “Revelation,” the custodian said. “I’m sure you don’t understand what it means,” said the professor condescendingly. “Actually, I do,” he replied. “It means Jesus wins.”

In the face of life’s challenges, it’s important to remember that ultimately God always wins! And since His plans are always in the victory lane, it’s infinitely wiser to converge with His will rather than compete with it.       [Read more...]
